Stuart did his basic surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Accident and Emergency and Neurosurgery. After gaining his Fellowship in Surgery, he became a professional rugby player for 2 seasons whilst also working part-time in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Start then gained a place as a Specialist Registrar on the All Wales training scheme in Trauma and Orthopaedics. During this 6 year period he rotated around hospitals in Wales and was trained in most aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedics. He successfully passed his exit exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics and his final year of training was spent in Adelaide, South Australia. During this year he gained further specialist training in Lower Limb and Sports Surgery.

Stuart was appointed a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in July 2005. He has a full-time NHS contract and specialises in sports injuries and all aspects of knee surgery. He has been Clinical Director and is currently Audit Lead for his department. Stuary is an Honorary Clinical Teacher at Cardiff University, in recognition of his contribution to undergraduate teaching and he is on the Faculty for various courses run at the Welsh Institute of Minimal Access Therapy at the University Hospital of Wales. Stuart has maintained an active interest in research and has given many presentations at regional, national and international meetings.
